How Long Does It Take to Get a SIRET Number in France?

Find out how long the INPI registration process takes and when you can start invoicing clients.

One of the most common questions from expats registering as auto-entrepreneur in France: how long does it take?

The short answer

Typically 1–4 weeks from submitting your registration to receiving your SIRET number.

Step by step

StepTimeframe
Complete and submit registration15–60 minutes
INPI processing1–4 weeks
SIRET number issuedAfter processing
First URSSAF declarationEnd of first quarter

Factors that can slow things down

  • Incomplete documents — missing or unclear passport/ID or proof of address
  • Wrong activity description — if INPI needs clarification on your business activity
  • High volume periods — January is typically the busiest registration period
  • Public holidays — French public holidays can add days to processing time

Can you speed it up?

Not significantly — INPI processing times are largely fixed. What you can control:

  • Submit complete, clear documents first time
  • Use a service like Simpleo that knows exactly what INPI requires, reducing back-and-forth (currently free during beta)

Can you work before receiving your SIRET?

Technically your registration is in progress, but most clients will want a SIRET number before paying invoices. It's best to wait until you receive it before invoicing.

Bottom line

Plan for 2–3 weeks from registration to being fully operational. Submit your documents carefully and completely to avoid delays.
